Welcome to Philosophy in Film. Philosophy in Film is an independent film criticism website operated by Matthew Jones. In these Terms of Service, “Philosophy in Film,” “PiF,” “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to Philosophy in Film and its operator.
By accessing or using https://philosophyinfilm.com, you agree to these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to these terms, please discontinue your use of the website.
2. About Philosophy in Film
Philosophy in Film publishes film reviews, essays, lists, interviews, and other material related to cinema, philosophy, culture, and the film industry.
Reviews, ratings, interpretations, and other critical opinions represent the author’s personal judgment. They are provided for informational and entertainment purposes and should not be treated as professional, legal, financial, medical, or other specialized advice.
3. Editorial Independence
Editorial reviews and ratings published by Philosophy in Film reflect the author’s independent critical judgment. PiF does not accept payment in exchange for editorial reviews, positive coverage, favorable opinions, or particular ratings.
Receiving a screener, press material, festival credential, complimentary admission, or other access does not guarantee coverage or influence the conclusions of a review.
PiF may separately publish paid filmmaker spotlights, interviews, trailer features, press-release content, social promotions, and other sponsored material. Paid content is identified as sponsored and is kept separate from independent editorial reviews and ratings.

4. Intellectual Property
Unless otherwise stated, the original writing, site design elements, branding, logos, and other original material published by Philosophy in Film belong to Matthew Jones or Philosophy in Film and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws.
You may share links to PiF articles and quote limited portions for purposes such as commentary, criticism, scholarship, or news reporting, provided that you clearly credit Philosophy in Film or Matthew Jones and include a link to the original page.
You may not republish complete articles, reproduce substantial portions of the website, remove attribution, sell PiF content, or use PiF content to create a competing publication without prior written permission.
Automated scraping, bulk extraction, database creation, or use of PiF content to train or develop artificial-intelligence systems is prohibited without prior written authorization.
5. Film Stills and Third-Party Materials
Film titles, posters, production stills, trailers, quotations, trademarks, and other third-party materials remain the property of their respective owners. Philosophy in Film does not claim ownership of these materials.
Such material may be presented in connection with criticism, commentary, reporting, scholarship, promotion, or identification of the work being discussed. All rights belonging to the respective copyright and trademark owners are acknowledged.
If you are a rights holder and believe that material has been used improperly, please contact us with the URL of the page, identification of the material, evidence of your rights, and a description of your concern.
6. Comments and User Contributions
Readers may be able to submit comments or other material through the website. You remain responsible for anything you submit.
By submitting a public comment, you grant Philosophy in Film a non-exclusive, royalty-free right to display, reproduce, format, and retain that comment as part of the website and its archives.
Comments may be moderated, edited for formatting, held for review, or removed at our discretion. We may remove content that is abusive, threatening, discriminatory, defamatory, unlawful, deceptive, promotional, irrelevant, infringing, or otherwise harmful to the website or its readers.
You may not impersonate another person, submit confidential information without authorization, distribute malware, publish spam, or use the comment system for unauthorized commercial promotion.
We are not responsible for opinions, claims, or materials submitted by website visitors.
7. Film Submissions and Review Consideration
Filmmakers, distributors, publicists, and other representatives may submit films, screeners, trailers, press kits, images, and related materials for consideration.
Submitting a film or providing access to a screener does not guarantee that PiF will watch, review, mention, promote, or respond to the submission. It also does not guarantee a particular publication date, opinion, rating, or outcome.
By submitting promotional materials, you represent that you have the authority to provide them and permit PiF to use them in connection with any agreed or independently selected coverage. Unless otherwise agreed in writing, unsolicited submissions are not considered confidential.
8. Sponsored Services
Philosophy in Film may offer clearly labeled sponsored services, including filmmaker spotlights, interviews, trailer features, press-release services, and social-media promotions.
Payment for these services purchases only the deliverables described in the applicable agreement or order. It does not purchase an editorial review, endorsement, favorable opinion, star rating, or placement on a third-party platform.
Specific fees, deadlines, revision terms, cancellation terms, and refund conditions will be communicated before a sponsored project begins. If project-specific written terms conflict with this page, the project-specific terms will control for that service.
PiF does not guarantee that sponsored services will produce a particular number of views, sales, followers, reviews, festival selections, distribution opportunities, or other results.
You must be at least 18 years old, or the legal age required to enter a contract in your jurisdiction, to purchase a service.
9. Advertising and Affiliate Links
Philosophy in Film may display third-party advertisements and participate in affiliate programs, including the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program.
Some links may be affiliate links. If you make a qualifying purchase through one of these links, PiF may earn a commission without increasing the price you pay. Affiliate relationships do not guarantee a positive opinion or rating.
Sponsored material and affiliate relationships will be disclosed where appropriate. Third-party advertisers and retailers are responsible for their own products, services, prices, availability, claims, transactions, and privacy practices.
10. Third-Party Websites
PiF may link to streaming services, retailers, publications, social-media platforms, filmmaker websites, Patreon, and other third-party services.
These links are provided for reference or convenience. Philosophy in Film does not control and is not responsible for the content, availability, security, pricing, policies, or practices of third-party websites. Visiting or purchasing from a third-party website is at your own discretion and subject to that website’s terms and policies.
11. Prohibited Uses
You may not use Philosophy in Film to:
- Violate any applicable law or regulation.
- Infringe another person’s copyright, trademark, privacy, or other rights.
- Distribute spam, malicious code, or harmful material.
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the website or its systems.
- Interfere with the website’s security, operation, or availability.
- Impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation.
- Copy, scrape, republish, or commercially exploit PiF content without authorization.
- Harass, threaten, defame, or abuse another person.

Film information, release dates, streaming availability, prices, external links, and other details may change after publication. PiF may correct, update, revise, or remove content at any time.

Philosophy in Film is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we make no warranties regarding the website’s uninterrupted availability, accuracy, reliability, security, suitability, or fitness for a particular purpose.
Nothing on PiF guarantees that you will agree with a review, interpretation, recommendation, or rating.
14. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Philosophy in Film and Matthew Jones will not be liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages arising from your use of, inability to use, or reliance on the website or any third-party service linked from it.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited.
15. Responsibility for Your Submissions
You agree that you have the necessary rights and permissions for any material you submit to PiF. You are responsible for claims arising from material you knowingly submit without authorization or in violation of another person’s rights.
